Abstract

An attorney may practice the law collectively, as a partner in a professional partnership of lawyers (a collective law office), or as an individual, either as the owner of a law office of one's own (an individual law office) or as an attorney who works with or aids a collective or individual law office under a civil-law contract or a special job contract. These different ways of practicing the law do not affect the civil liability an attorney may incur in the course of engaging in his or her profession. An attorney is directly and personally liable should his or her professional actions have harmful consequences for the client (be it the attorney's own client or the client of a collective or individual office to which the attorney belongs), because the attorney practices the law as an independent professional.
